The goals of the Studio Retreat are to provide veteran writers with uninterrupted time to focus on creative projects, good working conditions, and a supportive community of other veteran writers. The Studio Retreat is based on a model developed by well-known, culturally significant artist colonies, including Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony, as well as established writing conferences such as Sewanee, Breadloaf and the Aspen Writers’ Foundation.
The Words After War Retreats are held at locations across the country, providing no-cost lodging, board, and intensive literary programming for veterans and their families. We seek to gather veterans in a supportive creative environment complete with workshops, mentorship opportunities, craft talks, lectures and readings by visiting authors.
Words After War seeks to partner with appropriate hosting sites or institutions whose missions are aligned with our own.
